1. a sour liquid produced by the fermenting of cider, wine, beer, ale, malt, or the like, consisting largely of dilute, impure acetic acid. Vinegar is used in salad dreing and in flavoring or preserving food.
2. a preparation made by macerating a drug in dilute acetic acid and filtering.
3. Figurative. speech or temper of a sour or acid character: »

several little sprinklings of wordy vinegar (Dickens).
